My New Buddy, Duke

Duke is the sweet boy I am caring for this weekend in Petaluma. We had a nice pre-sunset walk this afternoon, and are now relaxing by the fireplace watching Seinfeld reruns.

Duke is an 8 and 1/2 year old "lab mix", maybe some Sheppard, maybe some Chow, maybe some Heeler...Definitely all kinds of sweet and mellow!

Because Duke's hips are compromised, we can't play ball or do too much strenuous walking. So instead, we are going to take daily walks that are good for us, but not overly challenging. And on Sunday, I am taking Duke to see our friend Louisa at The Swimming Dog, where he will be able to soak in warm water while doing some anti-gravity treadmill work...and will get to swim in the bigger therapy pool as well. I can't wait, as I know it will feel so good on Duke's joints...and will be an over all cleansing for him. I know that, for me, swimming always brings with it the gift of "healing feelings"!

It's Up To Us!

Dear Fellow Bergin Students, Staff & Volunteers:

I'm deeply upset by how overweight Rags is. In a school full of service dogs, I fear that our sweet cat - whose job it is to work for the betterment of the dogs and is, therefore, herself a service animal - gets overlooked. Yes, Rags has a ton of fur. And yes, she is precious and roley poley just the way she is. But all of that extra weight she carries is NOT cute, or funny. It's not even okay. It is a problem, and it makes me extremely sad. Angry, even.

Because of Rags' unique living situation, and the collective working environment at Bergin, WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE for keeping Rags healthy! I know many perceive of her as "just the fat campus cat", but she is so much more than that.

She is a beautiful, graceful feline soul, whose wild counterparts and ancestors are cunning huntresses, stalking and running down prey in the dark of night. Rags has the same primal spirit in her, and it is her God given right to be able to channel that energy in whatever ways a domestic cat is able. It is UP TO US to give her that opportunity!

So I ask, even BEG, everyone... PLEASE..When it is your turn to feed Rags, spend some time with her! PLAY with her! Get her up and running around! Take five minutes out of your lunch break to flash a laser beam or a catnip mouse for her to chase around the room!

Quickly dashing into Bonnie's office and throwing food in her bowl simply isn't enough. Yes, it will keep her alive. But food isn't the only subsistence a kitty needs in order to thrive, and be the happy, healthy girl she deserves to be. It is play, exercise, and the loving interaction in which these gifts are given, for which Rags is starving.

Miss Elyse

Our job this week was to test our newly assigned dogs on all commands, and see "where they stand". Elyse, being part of the "E" litter, could potentially graduate this spring. While I would work hard regardless of her age or "rank" or chance of graduating, this reality places that much more importance on the work I am doing with this beautiful dog. I am thoroughly impressed with the work my classmate, Christine, did with Elyse. She is solid on so much of her command repertoire, and is simply a wonderful, sweet, smart, precious being.

Our assignment was then to come up with a training plan as to how we will address whatever we see needs improvement. This is what I came up with.

ELYSE:

Over all, I feel that Christine's summation of Elyse's progress is very close to (what I perceive to be) her current standing. She is a very capable dog, and I feel confident about her abilities in most areas.

The issues I see are as follows:

1. Elyse despises "dressing". She shies away from her harness, and will only "willingly" put on when lured with a treat.

2. Sometimes, when I ask Elyse to do a simple command, such as DOWN or GO IN, she simply doesn't do what I ask. I know this is not because she doesn't know what I am asking of her.

3. Elyse is extremely distracted by tennis balls! Amazingly, Christine trained her to WAIT until she is given permission to run after a tennis ball that has been thrown in the field. But if there is a ball in her midst, she has a hard time LEAVING IT.

4. Elyse is very sensitive about grooming. She doesn't like having her ears touched or cleaned. I have yet to try her nails, but have a feeling it will be difficult, based on what I remember hearing Christine say last semester, and also on what I know of Elyse thus far.

5. Elyse is EXTREMELY soft, sometimes almost to a fault. She has delicate sensibilities, and must be handled with great care. She can get a little jumpy at times.

*****

My TRAINING PLAN, as related to each of the aforementioned issues, is as follows:

1. I will continue trying to make dressing a positive experience for Elyse, maybe spending a whole ten or fifteen minutes working only on DRESS. I will use really high value treats, and reward her with a tennis ball throw when I see she is making progress.

2. I will continue using creativity and variation in the way I give commands, using different voice intonations, postures, etc. Here is a place where I also will test out the vibration collar, giving Elyse corrections when she doesn't do as she is asked.

3. I will work with Elyse (both inside and on the field), rewarding her for leaving tennis balls alone and turning her attention back to me.

4. I will use very high value treats when I try to do Elyse's nails next week...hot dogs, maybe, or brisket.

5. I will continue to work on building up Elyse's confidence. I will do this wielding the tools of patience, empathy compassion and love...in conjunction and balance with the provision of clear rules, boundaries and limitations, concise and consistent communication, and calm-assertive leadership. I will continue taking her for walks and runs, which will make her feel healthy, strong and proud. Often, we walk/run at night, which I believe fosters an even deeper sense of confidence than being out in the "safety" of daylight. I will expose her to everything, and expect the absolute most from her. I will honor exactly who she is as I learn to better communicate with her. I will give everything in my heart and mind to training Elyse, with the goal in mind of helping her graduate this spring!

01-21-13: A Very Special Day

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and the 50th anniversary of the I HAVE A DREAM speech. Barack Obama was sworn in for his second term today. Best - and most special - of all is that Elyse and I got to send Chris of on his grand Australian adventure today! We spent a couple of lovely hours in Walnut Creek, a surprise hang out session for which I am most grateful. I love you, Chris! Safe journey!

Bodega Bay or Bust!

Barbara, Ellie, Elyse and I spent a glorious Sunday, tooling along the Northern CA Coastline, enjoying the sublime scenery. Here are a few snapshots from our wonderful day...
